Surprise (Nic & Erin)

There I was sitting on the closed toilet seat, bouncing slightly from being nervous. The box said I had to wait for about 15 minutes before I could read the result. My heart was racing as I was sweating a bit from the nerves. Nic was out somewhere and maybe that was a good thing. I did not know how in the world he was going to react about this. Maybe he would be happy. Maybe upset. The timer next to me ticked as it was counting down the time until I was able to read the results. 30 seconds... Slowly, I let out my breath I was holding a bit as I then closed my eyes. "It will be okay Erin..." I whispered to myself to stay calm and collected. Just then, the timer went off loudly, causing my heart to beat faster. My eyes snapped open as I then looked towards the test I just took. My eyes widen as I then read the results. "Oh my god..." Was this real? Was this really happening?

I walk inside the house and look around. I can't see Erin anywhere. I walk up the stairs taking them two at a time. I go in the bedroom and see Erin sitting on the toilet in the bathroom. She's looking a....pregnancy test? She looks shocked. Not necessarily happy or sad. Just shocked. Erin. What is it, darling? I walk into the bathroom and lean against the counter.

My whole body had gone pale as I was not sure how he was going to take the news. No words escaped from me as I then handed him the pregnancy test. The test had two pink lines on it. Two pink lines... My knees were shaking as the palms of my hands were sweating. "I am going to call the doctor to make an appointment with one of their specialist there to see what the final result is..." My eyes never met Nic's gorgeous eyes as I bit my lip a bit as my sweaty palms grabbed for my cell phone. Deep inside of me, I was thrilled of the news, but I was waiting for Nic's reaction.

I look at the test and look back up at Erin. I swallow. We'll go together. We'll be fine. I smile brightly. I'll take care of you both; I promise. I pull her into a hug. I can see she's nervous.

As I stood on his tip toes, I hugged him around his neck. "Thank you Nic...Thank you." That was all I could really say as I then looked into his eyes as that moment. Nic and I were going to be parents. Parents tot he child I was carrying inside of my small body. "I should call the doctor now about making an appointment." That was when I brought my phone to my ear and clear my threat at that moment. "Hi there. I am Erin Smith and I need to make an appointment to see if I am pregnant.....Today? What time? ... In 2 hours? I am sure that I can make it. Actually, yes I can make it to that appointment. Thank you." I then hung up and sighed a bit.

I take her hand. Come on. Let's go now; you can let your nerves ware down. I smile softly. Am I ready to be parent? I suppose. Erin's only 21 though. I'm not sure how she feels about that. I mean, this means that we probably should get married, but are we ready for that? I love her, but that's a big step.

He was trying to be calm for me, I knew it. Softly, I smiled back at him. "Thank you so much Nic. Lets go." As I was holding his hand, we walked out to our ride for the journey him and I were going to take. Deep down I felt like Nic was not ready for this. I was a bit ready for this, but it was a huge stopper in my life. I had to calm down and relax now and days. I had to think about whatever was I doing. If people were having a baby, they were getting married or already married, but Nic and I were dating. I did not know if we were ready for that. Him and I were just in terrible relationships before we met one and other. Another sigh escaped from my lips as we then arrived at the Jeep that was parked in the driveway. My heart was racing once more, but my palms were not sweaty.

I help her into the car and climb in on my side. I drive us to the hospital and walk us into the waiting room. I check Erin in and sit beside her. I take her hand. I hate hospitals. We'll be fine. We always are.

He was tense, I could tell that he was tense. My thumb ran over top of his knuckles as I then whispered, "Yes we will be Nic. We are both strong and powerful, we can make it through anything that is thrown at us." A smile spread on my lips as I then pecked his lips as I then leaned my head onto his shoulder and closed my eyes. Even with my heart racing, I was breathing slowly in and out at that moment. My grip on his hand tightened slightly a bit at that moment. We can do it. I know we can. Him and I can do anything that is put in front of us.

I let out a breath. This is a lot of responsiblity on me. Sure Erin has to carry the baby around for 9 months. Make no mistake, I want this baby. But I wish it didn't have to come with so many complications. Erin and I aren't married. I don't want my kid to have parents with different last names. That's just confusing and hard to explain. I just-I don't know if I'm ready for that yet. I'm 24 years old. I'm a soldier; I have all the money in the world but I guess I need to quit my job. I don't want to leave my child without a father. God why do there have to be so many factors in this.

I frown as I then look up at him as I knew he was tense. "Nic, please tell me what is on your mind. I want to help you." I sat up this time as I looked up at him. Did he not want this child? Did he not want to be with me? I wanted him to be down right truthful as I was with him. "Please tell me Nic." I then squeezed his hand a bit to show him that I was there for him through everything that happens. I didn't want him to feel uncomfortable with me carrying a baby. I didn't want him to change.

I squeeze her hand back and offer a small smile. Nothing, I'm fine. I kiss her cheek as her name's called. Erin and I stand. I place my hand on the small of her back to lead her through the doors. The nurse leads us to a room.

As him and I were walking, I looked around towards the other rooms to see some mom's were there with their baby for a check-up and others were there with their belly bulging with a baby inside of them. A small gulp escaped from me as Nic and I then walked into the room we were escorted into. "The doctor will be here soon. Erin, could you please change into this gown and then the doctor will be right in." the nurse said as she then handed me the hospital gown and walked out of the room. As the door closed, I walked behind the curtain and got changed into the hospital before I stepped out from behind the curtain. My clothes were folded and now on the chair besides Nic. "Here we go, huh?" I whispered to him right then at that moment.

I nod as she sits down on the hospital bed. I sit beside her and take her hand in mine. I press a kiss to her knuckles. Here we go. I smile and peck her lips before sitting back down.

I sat there and smiled a bit at Nic as he sat on the chair that was near the bed. The nurse came back in and said, "Sorry Erin, we need you to take this urine test." I stand up and take the cup. "It is no problem ma'am. Where is the bathroom?" She smiled as she then guided me to the restroom. After I was done taking the test, I handed her the cup and washed my hands greatly. After I was cleaned up, I walked out of the bathroom and walked back into the room Nic was. Giving him a slight side ways smile, I walked to the bed and took a seat at that moment. My legs swing back and forth a bit at that moment.

I take her hand back in mine again and squeeze her hand reassuringly. I look up as a doctor walks in.

As the doctor walked in, my heart race accelerated as I then sat up straight. Papers were in his hands as he then smiled at Nic and then at me. "Well hello there Miss Smith. I am your doctor, Doctor Marshall." The doctor then pulled up his rolling chair to be in front of me as he then looked at Nic. "You must be her boyfriend." I rolled my eyes a bit as he said that. I was not in the mood for this as I just needed to know the answer as fast as I could. My heart was pounding all over in my chest as I then sighed a bit. The doctor coughed as he then flipped through some of the pictures. "Well then, looks like you are with child Erin. You are about a month pregnant." It was about a month since Nic and I came back from Australia, so the time did add up perfectly.

I clear my throat. What are the next steps? I ask him. Obnoxious man. Thanks for pointing out we're not married, Doctor. My voice is calm and polite though I am seething inwardly.

I knew Nic to well to know he was seething on the inside. Gently, I grasped his hand gently, running my hand over his knuckles gently. The doctor leaned back in his chair as he then said, "Next steps would include, picking a hospital to give birth in. A doctor for the pregnancy. I also suggest that within the third or fourth month you come in for a sex check if you want to know what gender the baby is. Also, go and by some parenting and pregnancy books. Those will be very useful." This was all really happening. I was becoming a mother and Nic a father.

I nod and stand. I shake the doctor's hand. Thank you; we'll get right on that. I offer a tight smile. The doctor nods and shakes Erin's hand before walking out. He closes the door behind him. I lean against the bed and wait for Erin to change back into her clothes.

I got back into my shorts, tank-top and tennis shoes. As I walked back out, I looked at my boyfriend and hugged him around his waist. My face were buried in his chest a bit more at that moment. His cologne lingered his clothes as I smelt it a bit. "Nic, lets go." I stated as I then let go of him and held out a hand for him to grab onto. My eyes were soft and gentle, just as gentle as my smile was to him.

I take her hand in mine and lead her out the door. I hand a check across the desk to pay for the visit and thank the ladies at the desk. I open the car door for Erin and climb in on my side. I start the car but make no move to put it in reverse.

I notice that we were just sitting there in complete silence as the Jeep was started up already. My eyes looked at him as I then crossed my legs on the seat as I then looked at him. "Nic, do you want to talk?" One of my hands went onto his arm as I then rubbed it up and down at that moment. I was showing that I was going to be here for him no matter what happened there and then. No matter what.

I look out the window. Are you ready for this? I say quietly.

Slowly, I sighed a bit as I then looked down at my lap a bit at that moment. "I am and I am not. It is a weird feeling as I know that I want to be with you no matter what happens, but I am scared to have a baby. I mean, I was told that I might never have kids, but then I get pregnant. You Nic?" I shake my head a bit as I then run a hand through my hair. Small tears were in my eyes, but they were not going to roll down my cheeks at all.
